Malayalam filmmaker Jeethu Joseph has been promoting his next, a thriller called Mirage, starring Asif Ali and Aparna Balamurali in the lead. But the majority of most of his media interactions so far have revolved around his next, the third instalment in the Drishyam franchise. Jeethu is set to go on floors with the film later this month and is looking at completing it in a quick 45-day schedule. When the third part was announced, Jeethu says that he saw comments claiming that the script will be even better than that of the second film.

Drishyam 3's scripting pattern is more like the first film

The filmmaker, though, is quick to clarify that he does not function like that and cannot write accordingly. “The scripting patterns of Drishyam 3 is vastly different from Drishyam 2. In the third film, there are a set of events and I have written the script to present them to audiences. For all you know, Drishyam 3’s scripting pattern could be closer to that of the first film. I don’t want audiences coming to theatres expecting some groundbreaking scripting pattern. The only expectation they should have is about finding out what’s happening with Georgekutty’s family after 4 years – nothing more, nothing less,” said Jeethu, at a pre-release media briefing of Mirage, adding that budget and scale wise, Drishyam 3 is smaller than Drishyam 2.

Meanwhile, the Hindi version of Drishyam 3 is being prepped for a simultaneous release with the Malayalam original, said Jeethu. “Today, with or without subtitles, Malayalam cinema has an audience across the country, so, if our Drishyam 3 comes out first, it will affect their revenue. That’s the ongoing discussion with the team of the Hindi version. I have given them my script, which they are modifying to suit their nativity. They will likely go on floors around the same time as us,” said the filmmaker, who is gunning for a Christmas 2025 release with Drishyam 3.

Mirage, which hits theatres on September 19, revolves around 3 main characters, played by Asif, Aparna and Hannah, as they investigate someone’s disappearance. The film is based on a story by Aparna R Tarakad, which Jeethu and Srinivasan Abrol adapted for the screen. Music is by Vishnu Shyam, while cinematography credits are with Satheesh Kurup.
