Unlike the usual festive season when star films release, this year, the Tamil cinema witnessed the films of three young actors. Pradeep Ranganathan, who delivered Love Today and Dragon, came up with Dude; Harish Kalyan, fresh from the success of Parking and Lubber Pandhu, starred in Diesel, and Dhruv Vikram paired up with filmmaker Mari Selvaraj for Bison. All three films are of different genres and hit theatres on October 17.

However, at the box office, Dude topped with an opening of Rs 10 crore. The film is helmed by debutant Keerthiswaran, and thanks to its commercial packaging and presence of young stars like Mamitha Baiju and Pradeep Ranganathan, Dude catered to the mass audience and is leading the Diwali race. Second comes Bison, a film that comes from Mari Selvaraj, who has not witnessed a flop so far. The sports drama, which is both heavy and poignant, has made Rs 2.5 crore, followed by Diesel, an actioner, which has made only Rs 0.25 crore.

With Diwali weekend just begun, the next few days will determine if Pradeep’s Dude will beat his Dragon and Love Today records of Rs 100 crore, and if Mari Selvaraj continues his success streak. Harish Kalyan’s Diesel, which did not get favourable reviews from critics, has to gain audience support.

Dude, Bison and Diesel OTT releases:

The post-theatrical streaming rights of both Bison and Dude are bagged by Netflix, with Diesel’s OTT partner yet to be announced. All three films will continue to have a theatrical run for the next few weeks before beginning to stream.
