After what felt like a wait for ages, Dune: Part Two, aka Dune 2, has finally been released on the big screen, marking a massive cinematic event of the year. The Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya starrer was one of the most anticipated movies of the year, and the curiosity to know what happens on Arrakis after the events of the first film was immense. It is a given that the movie will turn out to be one of the highest-earning movies at the global box office in 2024 and might end up breaking many records too. The numbers from Thursday are now out, and experts have now given estimates about the collections of Part Two during the first weekend of its release.

Dune: Part Two Box Office Collections

Experts had already called Dune 2 a box office monster even before the movie was close to its release date. Warner Bros. even postponed the release so that Timothée and Zendaya could tour around and increase the buzz around the movie, resulting in good footfall. The studio had even arranged for early domestic previews on Thursday, a day before the official release of the movie on the big screen. It turns out the said preview on Thursday itself has earned a massive number that puts Dune: Part Two on the list that includes Oppenheimer and Barbie.

As per The Hollywood Reporter report, Dune: Part Two has managed to earn a whopping $12 million just with the previews on Thursday. This number is over double what the first film managed to earn. The early previews for Dune in 2021 brought in $5.1 million. What is even more surprising in this pool is the fact that this is the strongest preview collection since Barbie and Oppenheimer, released in July 2023. The Margot Robbie starrer has brought in $22.3 million in the previews, and the Christopher Nolan hit managed to bring in $10.5 million. This means that the Timothée Chalamet starrer sits over Cillian Murphy’s film.

The Estimates

Now this is enough to tell you about the demand for Dune 2, which is now in theatres. Experts are now claiming that Dune: Part Two will end its first weekend at the box office at between $80 million and $85 million. Some are even bold enough to predict numbers beyond $90 million. However, Warner Bros. is trying to play it safe, as they expect $65 million domestically and $75 million internationally. However, reports have claimed that the movie has already crossed the $50 million mark with its day-one collection at the global box office.

If Dune: Part Two manages to open in the range that is estimated, there is no stopping the movie from becoming a hit in no time. Not just that, even the mostly positive word of mouth will only strengthen the movie going forward. The sequel even has an upper hand over the predecessor because, back in 2021, Dune was released simultaneously on both the big screen and HBO Max, which was the new policy of the studio to curb the losses amid the ongoing pandemic at that time.

Dune: Part Two was released on March 1 and is now running in theatres near you. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else in the world of streaming and films.
