Dune: Part Three teaser trailer – Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya return for darker, action-packed look at Fremen Jihad’s consequences and Atreides finale

Denis Villeneuve's science-fiction trilogy's climax, the first teaser trailer for Dune: Part Three, has been unveiled. The film will be based on Frank Herbert's 1969 book, Dune Messiah, as confirmed by the two-minute teaser, which premiered at a Los Angeles event.

Why did Denis Villeneuve decide on a 17-year narrative time jump?

The trailer introduces a significant narrative shift by setting the story 17 years after the events of Dune: Part Two. According to Villeneuve, this choice was taken to better reflect the ages of the actors and the evolution of their characters, and it deviates little from the original 12-year difference.

Timothée Chalamet plays Paul Atreides, the newly crowned Padishah Emperor, and he is the focus of the film. While earlier instalments were centred around his ascent to power, Part Three shows the fallout from that position of influence. The Fremen Jihad has killed billions of people around the galaxy, and the trailer shows how internal and foreign conflicts have arisen as a result.

What role does Paul and Chani’s relationship play in the new Dune: Part Three trailer?

In the preview, the romance between Paul and Chani, played by Zendaya, is front and center. Amidst the political difficulties and Paul's marriage to Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh), which is revealed at the end of the second film, the teaser depicts Paul and Chani enjoying a rare moment of tranquillity as they contemplate their future together. In a direct reference to the original series, they discuss possible names for their future children: Ghanima for a girl and Leto for a boy.

The teaser finally reveals Scytale, a Tleilaxu Face Dancer, played by Robert Pattinson, one of the main adversaries. Playing a "shape-shifter" at the centre of a plot to depose the Atreides clan, the actor makes an unusual, otherworldly entrance.

Which characters are returning and how have their roles evolved?

The role of Anya Taylor-Joy's Alia Atreides, Paul's sister, has grown considerably since her childhood, and she now carries the "weight and wisdom of generations". The teaser also confirms that Jason Momoa will be returning as Duncan Idaho. Despite his death in the original film, the teaser for Dune Messiah implies that he may make a triumphant return using the Tleilaxu "ghola" technology. Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, and Charlotte Rampling are among the returning cast members, playing Lady Jessica, Stilgar, Gurney Halleck, and Reverend Mother Mohiam, respectively.

"Muscular thriller" and "more action-packed" were the words used by Villeneuve to describe the third film. "Part Three" seems to center on political intrigue and high-stakes sabotage, in contrast to the first two films, which focused on worldbuilding and conventional warfare, respectively. Cinematographer Linus Sandgren used a 65 mm IMAX film to capture the new visual approach, which introduces more industrialised planetary settings while continuing the franchise's history of expansive desert vistas.

A new, darker arrangement of the series' characteristic themes—including a chant spoken by Chalamet himself—is featured in the teaser, which also highlights the return of composer Hans Zimmer. Dune: Part Three is set for theatrical release on December 18, 2026. With an exclusive run in IMAX theatres, the film is likely to dominate premium formats.
