Kannada actor Duniya Vijay’s sophomore directorial Bheema is gearing up for its date with audiences. The film has been ready for a while, and Vijay had been trying to figure out the best release window possible. We now hear that since Shivarajkumar’s Bhairathi Ranagal is rumoured to be bowing out of the Independence Day race, Vijay is toying with the idea of releasing Bheema on July 26. There are rumours that Real Star Upendra’s newest directorial UI may take up the August 15 slot, but sources suggest that the actor-filmmaker is not a fan of an August release.
Although Vijay has revealed a teaser, he made sure not to give away anything about the plot and has been very tight-lipped about the film. All that he lets slip is that it is a gritty crime drama, which also stars Ashwini, Black Dragon Manju, Achyuth Kumar, Rangayana Raghu, Gili Gili Chandru, Girija, and Kalyani Raju. Vijay will be seen in the title role in the film, which, like his directorial debut Salaga, will explore Bengaluru’s underworld. Bheema, he says, is a reflection of the style and sensibility he developed over the years, based on his observations of the directors he has worked with.

Vijay has explained that he chose to cast a bunch of newbie actors in his film, as he can relate to their desire of doing good work in Kannada cinema. In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Vijay had said that now that he is in a position to provide opportunities to new talent, he takes great pleasure in being able to introduce fresh and credible talent with each of his films.
Vijay, who was last seen as the antagonist in Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Veera Simha Reddy, also did a pivotal cameo in his Salaga co-star Dhananjaya’s latest, Kotee, which is currently in theatres. He has also signed up to play the lead in Gentleman maker and Kaatera writer Jadesha K Hampi’s next, in which he will be pitted against Raj B Shetty.
