Dunki Diaries – Rajkumar Hirani explains to Shah Rukh Khan that the idea of making Dunki came from THIS reason

After giving back-to-back blockbusters Pathaan and Jawan, Shah Rukh Khan is back with his last film of the year – Dunki. The film is making quite headlines since Red Chillies Entertainment dropped the much awaited trailer. Netizens have flooded showing their excitement on the internet. Even today after T-Series dropped the Bands song, it garnered over 1.6 million views within four hours.

The Dunki trailer begins with Shah Rukh Khan, playing a character named Hardy, showing his face on a moving train. He tells us it's the year 1995 and we are in a village called Laltu. He introduces his friends – Sukhi (Vicky Kaushal), who's bad at English, and Mannu (Taapsee Pannu), who always has Hardy's back when people make fun of his English. He calls Mannu his "girl–friend”, which means they are close friends, but not “romantically” involved.

The trailer has garnered over 52 million views, even though it did not exhibit much about the actual story. Fans seemed quite curious in the comments and all praised Shah Rukh Khan calling it a life-changing film for him. Even people could not stop praising Sonu Nigam’s voice as well, and placed his name after Mohd. Rafi and Kishore Kumar.

Rajkumar Hirani's disclosure about Dunki

The one thing that struck everyone's mind is that, what is the exact story of Dunki? Hence, to answer the question, Shah Rukh Khan brought director Rajkumar Hirani and Taapsee Pannu together with a special interview session named – Dunki Diaries. In the thirty-minute video, the trio talked about several interesting facts about the film. Starting from revealing where the idea came in Hirani’s mind to make Dunki, to spilling the beans about making a whole song about Shah Rukh Khan only.

What inspired Rajkumar Hirani?

While talking about the idea of Dunki, Rajkumar Hirani explained to Shah Rukh Khan that once he went to Jalandhar. There, he saw a strange thing, a house with an aeroplane stuck on its roof, like it landed there. He explained that in some places, when someone from a family moves abroad, their family builds a fake aeroplane on their house. It's like a special way to show how proud they are of their family member who travelled so far.

A special song on Shah Rukh Khan's character Hardy

Stepping away from the usual promotional tactics, Rajkumar Hirani chose to share a heartfelt gesture, a song dedicated to Shah Rukh Khan's Dunki character, Hardy. This heartfelt tribute, deeply personal to the director, hints at a new side of the charming yet complex protagonist.

Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Vicky Kaushal, Taapsee Pannu in the leads, and directed by Rajkumar Hirani, Dunki is all set to release in the theatres on December 21, 2023.
