Dybbuk preview: All you need to know about the horror film featuring Emraan Hashmi

Emraan Hashmi is all set to venture into the horror genre once again with Dybbuk, making it one of the most-awaited movies of recent times. Another reason this movie has got people excited is that it is the remake of a well-appreciated Malayalam film, Esra that starred Prithviraj Sukumaran. The movie, which is slated to release on Amazon Prime Video on October 29, is already creating a huge buzz. The film also stars Nikita Dutta and Darshana Banik in the lead roles.

What is Dybbuk all about?

Dybukk refers to a box in Jewish mythology. This box is known to possess malicious spirits of children below the age of 3 or disabled people.

What was the story of Ezra?

Ezra was about a couple who moved from Mumbai to Kochi. Ranjan Mathew's (Prithviraj) wife Priya Raghuram (Priya Anand) buys a dybbuk box and without having any knowledge about it, unlocks it and with it, all the spirits captured inside it. This leads to various paranormal activities amid Priya's pregnancy. Since the dybbuk box is known to attack children, the unborn baby is at a risk. Whether the couple manages to get rid of the box and all difficulties they face while doing so makes the film.

Emraan Hashmi retains the name of Ranjan, Nikita turns Mahi.

While Emraan plays Ranjan, the character portrayed by Prithviraj, Nikita will be known as Mahi. Like in the original, she brings the box home and unknowingly, opens it, inviting a hell lot of trouble.

Who are the other cast members of the film?

The film also stars Manav Kaul. He plays the role of the Father who performs an exorcism to rid the spirits. Apart from him, Dybbuk stars Darshana Banik, Pranay Ranjan, Yuri Suri, Denzil Smith, Vipin Sharma, Ivan Rodrigues, Vivana Singh and Sudev Nair in pivotal roles.

Emraan comes back to the horror genre, right after Chehre's release.

Emraan's last film Chehre was a thriller with certain subtle elements of horror. It was the chase and the over smartness of his character that made the film scary. This time, however, Emraan deals with spirits. Raaz: Reboot, released in 2016, was the last time he did that.

Where was Dybbuk shot?

The film was mainly shot in Mauritius. The location had to be then shifted to Mumbai owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Owing to the situation, the film opted for a direct-to-OTT release too.
