The 2005 film Sarkar is one of the most acclaimed films of filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma. RGV's directorial venture featured Amitabh Bachchan and his son Abhishek Bachchan. Written by Manish Gupta, it was a political crime thriller movie. However, Sr Bachchan and his son were not his first choices for Sarkar. Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma recently revealed the names he considers as the first choices for his movie.
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Ram Gopal Varma revealed Sanjay Dutt and Naseerudidn Shah were his first choices for Sarkar. "Yes, Sanjay was supposed to play Abhishek’s role, and Naseeruddin Shah was meant to play Amitabh’s role. Since Nayak didn’t happen, Sarkar was made. If I had made Nayak, regardless of its performance, I would have never made Sarkar," shared RGV.
The director recalled he was working on a film called Nayak when Dutt was arrested in the 1993 blast case. While RGV was waiting for Sanjay's release, he made an action comedy, which worked well at the box office. Since the film was a hit, he decided to make another film in the same genre after Sanjay was released.
"However, that film didn’t work. Had it not been successful, I wouldn’t have made it. But since it was, I did. Eventually, Nayak was shelved, and the title was dropped. It was a lovely title, but the project never materialized," he revealed.
Ram Gopal Varma started the Sarkar franchise with its first installment in 2005. After the first movie's success, its sequel Sarkar Raj was released in 2008. The second part was written by Prashant Pandey and also starred Aishwarya Rai in a pivotal role. It was backed by RGV and Praveen Nischoi. Seven years later, the third installment titled Sarkar 3 was released on the big screen. The star cast included Jackie Shroff, Amit Sadh, Manoj Bajpayee, and others.
