Every time director Rohit Padaki described his film Ekka , he said it was about one man’s journey to retain his innocence. But when the film came out, one thing was clear – Yuva’s character Muthu was far from trying to hang on to any semblance of innocence he ever had. Instead, he gravitated towards a life of violence and chose to stick with it even when offered an opportunity to leave it all behind and start afresh. So, what was Ekka really about?

Early on Muthu is established as a simpleton, who loves spending time with his friends and mother Rathna (Shruthi Krishna), vowing to never leave her side. But then, when one of his friends is in dire need of money, he pledges his home with a local landlord as a temporary measure. When the pal then absconds without returning the money and both Rathna and Muthu facing eviction, he heads off to Bengaluru to figure a way out of this financial mess.
In no time Muthu lands a gig as a cab driver, making slow and steady progress in clearing his loan. One fateful day, though, while ferrying a passenger, he makes a fuel stop, during which time the person in the cab gets shot at. Muthu manages to get the injured man to hospital in the nick of time, effectively saving his life. Turns out, the man he’d saved was Mastan (Atul Kulkarni), one of the most powerful gangsters of Bengaluru city, which makes the latter indebted to Muthu, while other gang members also hold him in high regard.

Muthu’s good deed, though, does not bode well for him and a neighbour’s young child that he deeply cares about, with one grievously hurt and the other succumbing to injuries. When Muthu figures out who was behind all the attacks, he’s driven by a deep desire for vengeance and from there on it is a rapid descent into all things rowdyism. Muthu quite literally spirals out of control, to the extent that he runs foul of his ‘mentor’ Mastan as well.
But after being at the centre of such a mess, can Muthu leave it all behind and return to a life of peace and tranquillity back home? Well, apparently after a 7-year jail stint, it’s not revenge that’s on his mind, but a mission to ‘clean up’ the city for the cops. Violence and murder is still his go-to, but that is what will get him back home to enjoy stress-free sleep.
