The conversation around content and the kind of films and shows being made in India is one of the most prominent discussions in the country. Over the past several months, many artists have spoken about it. The latest to do so was Anurag Kashyap, who, in a bold Instagram post, did not hide behind anonymity but directly called out Netflix India for its hypocrisy. He criticized the streaming giant for not greenlighting anything remotely as brave and well-made as the new Netflix show Adolescence. The filmmaker accused Netflix India of refusing to commission quality content. Now, it seems that Ekta Kapoor has cryptically taken a dig at Anurag in the same context while sharing her perspective on the matter.

In a series of Instagram stories, Ekta Kapoor addressed the criticism directed at content creators for producing a certain type of content while sidelining artistic storytelling. She suggested that perhaps the audience is not yet ready for the kind of movies that some filmmakers want to create. She cited Superboys of Malegaon and her own production, The Buckingham Murders, as examples. While these films were praised by critics, they failed at the box office. In doing so, she allegedly took a subtle jab at Kashyap. Explore these hidden gems on ShemarooMe

"When Indian creators cry that Indian content is not at par with internationally acclaimed TV series and films … I wonder if it is ego, anger, or just misplaced accusations," Ekta wrote before mentioning Superboys of Malegaon and The Buckingham Murders.

She further elaborated, stating, "When Superboys of Malegaon and my dear friend @hansalmehta’s The Buckingham Murders don’t work in theatres, can we blame the real culprits—the audience? And since it’s no fun blaming people in such abstract terms (we can’t bring them down on social media, so no fun), let’s just say that a major part of India is in its evolutionary stage when it comes to content consumption! You could say it’s in its adolescence."

Encouraging Indian creators to take matters into their own hands, Ekta urged them to invest their own money in the kind of content they want to make, rather than waiting for corporate studios and streaming platforms to back them.

“Creators, I urge you to fight the system. These money-hungry corporate studios and apps only think of money (myself included) and numbers!!!! Movie-making, content creation is not a business; it’s an art, and I want to support art. So, I urge creators to put in their own money … problem solved!!!!” she added.

Meanwhile, Anurag Kashyap, in his original post, had written, "Netflix India is a totally opposite shitshow. If they were pitched this, they would most likely have rejected it or turned it into a 90-minute film (which itself seems impossible because it doesn’t have a black-and-white ending)."
