In Season 4 of Emily in Paris, American marketing executive Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) has been living in the City of Lights for nearly a year, and what began as a light-hearted journey is beginning to take on a more serious tone. The show continues to focus on Emily's development and changing relationships in Season 4, which just feels like an evolution of her character. Deeper character exploration throughout the season leads to more complex and intense dynamics.
The glimpses of wintertime Paris and the turbulent relationship changes that almost all of the beloved characters undergo graphically depict the gloomy atmosphere of this season. After the Season 3 wedding cliffhanger, Emily and Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) sort things up, but they quickly call it quits since they realise they're not ready to be each other's ideal partner. After ending her engagement to Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), Camille (Camille Razat) flees and enters—and soon ends—a relationship with Greek artist Sofia (Melia Kreiling), believing she is carrying Gabriel's child—until she discovers she is not. This makes it possible for Emily and Gabriel to be together, but Emily's romantic and professional lives take a turn when she meets the attractive Italian businessman Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini).
In a Me Too-inspired exposé at Agence Grateau, Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) wrestles with the choice to speak out against JVMA chairman Louis de Leon (Pierre Deny). She worries about the fallout for her husband Laurent (Arnaud Binard), who is using JVMA money to launch a new nightclub. After leaving for a new position at JVMA (which he promptly returns to), Julien (Samuel Arnold) finds out that Luc (Bruno Gouery) has been lying to him for years. The JVMA features Ashley Park's character Mindy, Emily's best friend, and Paul Forman's character Nicolas, Mindy's boyfriend and presumed successor to Louis de Leon.
Mindy and Nico finally split up in the second half of the season after he spitefully disqualified her from Eurovision, but not before their anguish inspires an incredibly beautiful and viral musical performance in the streets of Rome. While Emily finds a new workplace rival in Sylvie's stepdaughter Geneviève (Thalia Besson), Agence Grateau manages to acquire a few significant Italian clients. Emily may relocate to Rome.
At the end of the season, Sylvie appoints Emily as the head of Agence Grateau's new Rome office, following her acquisition of an Italian espresso client and a six-month contract with Marcello's family-owned, discreet luxury fashion firm. Emily will still be present in both places, so she is not really leaving Paris.
Even after Gabriel and Emily spoke candidly about their feelings, Gabriel was still getting ready to become a father, and his restaurant was becoming more and more well-known. But Gabriel chooses to focus on his restaurant and come to terms with not becoming a father, and the two decide to part ways. In the end, Gabriel is travelling to Rome in order to make amends with Emily.
In Season 3, Camille's admissions damage Alfie's confidence, leading to an intense separation with Emily. Even though there are still some feelings involved, the show portrays their split as a polite and cathartic resolution.
After Emily meets Marcello, an Italian stranger who happens to be Nicolas's old buddy, they have a romantic weekend in Rome and learn more about the Muratori luxury cashmere company. In light of this connection, Emily must weigh the chance for new experiences against her current relationships when making decisions about her career and life.
Mindy's story's plot highlights her conflict with her domineering boyfriend and her ultimate decision to break up with him. Her viral Rome performance represents her artistic development and liberation.
Geneviève's arrival at the Agence Grateau office challenges Emily's status and introduces new dynamics. Emily finds a new purpose at work and more drama in Geneviève's unclear motives.
Sylvie feels obligated to help younger women, which motivates her to participate in the exposé even though she is afraid of what would happen to her husband and the unpleasant memories it will bring up.
After JVMA cuts funding, Sylvie's mother, Héloïse, a nightclub entrepreneur, gives Laurent a new location, showing her familial ties and giving Sylvie more dimension as a character.
Julien's decision to leave and then return to Agence Grateau highlights his commitment to the company, as well as the American characteristic of not allowing work-related conflicts to interfere with personal ties.
Gabriel finds closure in Marianne's admission that she is a tire inspector rather than a Michelin inspector, which frees him up to concentrate on his restaurant and obtain a Michelin star. This turns out to be a turning point in the relationship between Luc and Marianne.
