In this modern remake of the legendary classic from the 1970s, starring Noémie Merlant, Naomi Watts, and Will Sharpe, the themes of sexuality, power, and independence are reinvigorated. Eighth in the theatrical run and 15th in the series overall, this English-language French film adapts Emmanuelle Arsan's 1967 novel. The film had its world premiere on September 20, 2024, at the 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival, and it was released in French theatres on September 25, 2024, by Pathé.
The story follows Emmanuelle as she investigates and, possibly, fires Margot, a hotel manager in Hong Kong, on a clandestine mission for a high-end hotel group. When Emmanuelle discovers a clandestine escort ring based out of the luxurious Rosefield Palace, her professional mission takes a seductive turn. The encounter with Kei, an enigmatic client, heightens her curiosity and causes her inner turmoil. A blurring of boundaries between pleasure, control, and vulnerability occurs as she goes further into this mysterious realm.
Happening, directed by the renowned Audrey Diwan, won the Venice Golden Lion for its intricate emotional depth and beautiful visual poetry. Diwan adds a profound, multi-layered vision to the plot. Under her direction, Emmanuelle transforms from a softcore erotica piece into a thought-provoking psychological drama, improving upon the series' reputation while remaining faithful to its original focus on female desire.
The film's complex view of power dynamics between intimacy and luxury, as well as its unabashed depiction of feminine enjoyment, have prompted discussions. As much a narrative journey as it is a sensual one, Emmanuelle features beautiful cinematography and a haunting original tune.
