Richard Gadd's Baby Reindeer picks up the trophy again! The series won big at Emmy 2024, with four awards in its kitty. Richard was awarded Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Baby Reindeer, as well as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Jessica Gunning picked up the trophy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her role in Baby Reindeer. Apart from that, Baby Reindeer won Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Here's a look at Richard's speech on winning the award, and more about Baby Reindeer...
Richard Gadd, who is the writer as well as lead actor Donny in Baby Reindeer, got emotional as his work got noticed at Emmy 2024. He won an award both as the writer and actor in the movie. During his acceptance speech, Richard recalled how he was at his lowest point a decade back. "10 years ago, I was down and out, right? I never ever thought I'd get my life together," he said, adding he never believed that he could rectify himself and get back on his feet. "And then here I am, just over a decade later, picking up one of the biggest writing awards in television," Richard said in his speech. It is to be noted that Baby Reindeer is based on Richard's own story of being stalked and abused in his 20s.
Jessica Gunning was the first to win Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Richard Gadd then took three awards for the limited series. He won Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, as well as Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
Baby Reindeer is established as a British psycholgical black comedy-drama (with the thrill elements). The show is adapted from Richard's own autobiography, One-man show. The title is a fun play on his own profession - a stand-up comedian. The limited series is out on Netflix and looks at the aspiring comedian Donny Dunn (Richard's own time when he was just trying to make it as a Scottish comedian). During his time working as a bartender in a pub in London, he behaves politely with a customer named Martha Scott (Jessica Gunning), unaware of her criminal past. Developing feelings for Donny, Martha starts stalking him both in the real and reel world. While Donny gets Martha arrested, he also has a past - with TV writer Darrien O'Connor (played by Tom Goodman-Hill) assaulting Donny after drugging him. Donny comes across the once-mentor again and renews their collaboration reluctantly. Is he getting back in the loop? Watch the series on Netflix to find out.
