Empuraan box office collection day 9: Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s film continues to power its way through the box office, raking in big numbers and shattering records. L2 Empuraan, the sequel to the much popular Lucifer, now eyes to dethrone Manjummel Boys, which is currently the highest-grossing Malayalam film. Read on to know the box-office break-up details of the Mohanlal starrer as the Empuraan juggernaut continues.
Prithviraj Sukumaran’s third directorial, Empuraan, has earned Rs 2.9 crore at the box office on day 9 at the ticket window, as per Sacnilk. The total India net collections are over Rs 91 core, while the worldwide collections of Empuraan now stand at Rs 236.25 crore, as per the figures on the Sacnilk website.
Manjummel Boys, on the other hand, raked in Rs 241.03 crore at the box office last year, emerging to be the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever. This means that Empuraan is only around Rs 4.78 crore shy of beating Manjummel Boys. Given that Mohanlal’s action thriller film does not have to face any competition until April 10, L2 Empuraan looks to be in a strong position to dethrone Manjummel Boys in the coming days.
Though Empuraan was released in Hindi and other south Indian languages, the Malayalam version has been majorly contributing to the BO earnings. The Tamil version has collected Rs 3.13 crore, followed by Telugu and Hindi at Rs 2.42 crore and Rs 2.1 crore. The Kannada version of Empuraan is lagging far behind and looks nowhere near to touching even the Rs 1-crore mark.
It also needs to be highlighted that Empuraan has been making waves at the box office, even as the Mohanlal-Prithviraj Sukumaran film was hit with a barrage of criticisms and backlash. The Malayalam movie, penned by Murali Gopy, ran into controversy for several portions that portrayed riot scenes, inviting the wrath of right-wing groups.
Manjummel Boys, on the other hand, was a much-loved film, that won appreciation from audiences outside Kerala too, significantly adding to its box office collections. Directed by Chidambaram, the survival thriller follows a bunch of friends who visit the Gunaa caves in Kodaikanal. When one of them falls into the cave, his friends strive to save him at any cost.
