Empuraan: Pranav Mohanlal, mother Suchitra, Mallika Sukumaran rally behind Lucifer sequel - ‘Feels like an English film’

After all the hype and anticipation, Mohanlal-starrer Empuraan finally hit theatres on March 27, 2025. The Prithviraj Sukumaran directorial, which witnessed unprecedented pre-sales and promotional activities, saw an enthusiastic opening in Kerala. Mohanlal joined the fans at an FDFS in a Kochi theatre. The rest of the Empuraan stars and their families too caught the first screenings of the film. Pranav Mohanlal on Empuraan 

Actor Pranav Mohanlal, the son of the Malayalam superstar, was among the audience who watched the film early on Thursday. Pranav, who is not frequently seen in public spaces or movie promotions, described the Mohanlal-starrer as ‘super’ when the media quizzed him.

Pranav’s mother, Suchitra, who had accompanied her husband Mohanlal to Kavitha theatre in Kochi, remarked that Empuraan 'feels like an English film’. Calling it a good film, Suchitra said she liked it.

On the other hand, actress Mallika Sukumaran, the mother of Prithviraj and Indrajith Sukumaran, had a more emotional response after watching the first screening. “This is the first time I am watching the first day, first show of a movie,” the Bro Daddy actress said, adding that she believes her son has done something remarkable. When the media quizzed about her turning emotional, she said it was because of thoughts about her husband (late actor) Sukumaran. 

Suraj Venjaramoodu, who is a part of Empuraan, also lavished praise on the film. He also expressed his hope that more such Pan-Indian big-budget films get made.

Empuraan release and reception

Empuraan released in theatres worldwide in multiple languages, including Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu on Thursday. The film, which shattered several pre-sales records, opened to mixed reviews. The stunning visuals and high production value of the film have won applause from the movie-goers. However, critics pointed out that a more solid script would have elevated Empuraan to the level of Lucifer, which is a fan-favourite.

Lucifer, which marked the directorial debut of stellar actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, is available for streaming on SonyLiv and OTTplay Premium in Hindi.
