Actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran is not one to mince his words and has strong opinions, which, voiced, has attributed to a general perception that he’s arrogant. He has often said that his confidence is misinterpreted as arrogance. When Prithviraj was asked about a common misconception about him during the promotions of his newest directorial, Empuraan, which releases in theatres on March 27, 2025, the actor didn’t bat an eyelid before replying that he’s largely misunderstood.

Prithviraj: People think I am disrespectful

“Like most people with a public profile, I am also largely misunderstood. But that’s not my case alone; it’s the case with everyone with a public profile and is out there in the public scrutiny. The public will have their own assumptions and imaginations about how that person will be, which more often than not will be very far away from the truth,” he said, speaking to Galatta Tamil.

Prithviraj cites the example of people in Kerala believing that he’s highly disrespectful. “I would like to think that I am a respectful person – to my seniors, co-actors, colleagues, juniors, etc. I like to be treated with respect and give respect, but there are people who think otherwise,” he added.

Empuraan, is Prithviraj’s third directorial and features Mohanlal yet again in the lead. The film is the second part in a proposed trilogy, which began with 2019’s Lucifer . Written by Murali Gopy, the sequel takes off where Lucifer ended and explores Stephen Nedumpally’s days as Khureshi Ab’raam.

While Lucifer can be treated as a stand-alone film and ends on a note that is satisfactory even without a sequel, Prithviraj has said that he’s taken a chance with Empuraan and ended it in such a fashion that audiences will look forward to the rest of the story. He adds that audiences who may not have seen Lucifer will be able to follow Empuraan, but may miss a few call backs to events from the original.
