Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam’s Haq recently landed on Netflix as it marked its awaited OTT premiere nearly two months after its theatrical release. In a conversation, Emraan Khan revealed how his character had several layers, which peeled off slowly to deliver an impactful performance. He also praised co-star Yami Gautam for giving a power-packed performance, which pushed him to do better.
Haq is among the most promising films of 2025 that not only grabbed attention for its solid narrative but also for the stellar performances of the lead actors like Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam. Haq is a legal drama that stars Emraan in a complex role juggling between moral dilemma and rooted ethics in a patriarchal society. During an interview with Times Now, Emraan Hashmi shared details about his intricate role as lawyer Abbas Khan and how it challenged him.

When asked what made him say yes to the film, Emraan agreed that one of the reasons was the layered or complex role that immediately pulled him in for a challenge. “What interested me was that in Haq my character is not positioned as right or wrong in an obvious way, he’s shaped by belief, entitlement, insecurity and the need to retain control. The script allows the audience to understand where he’s coming from without excusing his actions. That balance is difficult to write and even harder to play. I said yes because Haq portrays for you real-life disputes exactly how they are.”
Speaking further about his role, the 46-year-old actor revealed that his character is multifaceted with a dark side that unravels slowly throughout the screen presence rather than a solid villain character. He dubbed the role as a quiet but heavy influence that felt like a challenge because of the moral complexity. “This role feels quieter but heavier on the soul. In Haq, the conflict isn’t externalised through anger or aggression. So much of it’s internal, ideological and personal. My character believes he is justified, even ethical, in the choices he makes, especially within the legal framework. That kind of conviction is dangerous because it doesn’t feel like villainy to the person holding it,” Hashmi added.
Haq is loosely inspired by Shah Bano’s case and follows a tale of justice and equal rights of a woman who is abandoned by her husband after he marries another woman. The court battle against the odds of societal and religious stereotypes forms the crux of the narrative.
When asked how Emraan’s performance was shaped by Yami’s presence, the actor praised the latter for perfectly portraying the emotions with clarity and not going overboard. Yami Gautam played Shazia Bano, who embarks on the eponymous legal battle. “Many of our scenes depend on what is unsaid, like the glances, pauses, and the imbalance of power in a room. Her stillness creates tension without needing dialogue, which pushes you, as a co-actor, to respond,“ the Murder actor added.
Haq is currently streaming on Netflix. If you’re a fan of legal dramas, then binge-watch Pink, Jolly LLB and others via OTTplay Premium.
