Legendary Bollywood actor Manoj Kumar, best known for his range of patriotic film, died at the age of 87. He breathed his last in Mumbai's top hospital. Kumar died due to heart-related complications.
Veteran Bollywood actor Manoj Kumar died owing to heart-related complications. According to the medical reports submitted by the hospital, his cause of death is decompensated liver cirrhosis. The actor was aged 87.
PM Modi confirmed the news of Kumar's demise through the Twitter post which read, "He was an icon of Indian cinema, who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was also reflected in his films. Manoj Ji's works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti."
Manoj Kumar is best known for his patriotic films in Bollywood. Many superstars paid him tribute in one way or another over the years. Various mimickry artists also remembered the legend through his trademark talking with face hidden. Owing to that, Manoj Kumar was remembered for decades even when he wasn't working as actively in Bollywood as his prime years.
Manoj Kumar's most memorable movies include Purab Aur Paschim and Roti, Kapda Aur Makaan. The actor had also worked in Woh Kaun Thi, Patthar Ke Sanam, Neel Kamal and Kranti. His movie Gumnaam is what made him reach the level of a star. It was one of the highest-grossing movies when it released back in 1965.
Manoj Kumar was assigned the name of Harikrishnan Goswami at birth. He was born in Abbottabad, a small town in the North-West Frontier Province, British India (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan) in 1937.
Originally stage-named Bharat Kumar, the veteran was honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contributions to Indian cinema in 2015. He was also honoured with Padma Shri in 1992.
