Zendaya made history when she became the youngest winner of the Emmy Award for Best Lead Actress in a drama in 2020, for her role in Euphoria. The critically acclaimed series deals with some hard-hitting issues, including drug addiction and self-harm, and it seems that even the stars find it challenging at times to grapple with them. Zendaya recently opened up about the intense emotional and physical turmoil she had to go through when filming one particularly difficult episode of the show’s second season.

In a conversation with Variety, the actress talked about how mentally and physically demanding, she found it to film the episode titled ‘Stand Still Like the Hummingbird’, which saw her character, Rue, go through an emotional breakdown. Rue, a drug addict, suffers a relapse and has to go through the ordeal of the withdrawal process, which was depicted in its raw intensity on the show.

The actress recalled how alarmed she had been to film the sequence, saying she hated to see her character go through all that pain. Going through the array of issues, Rue had to deal with, her regret and frustrations at making terrible decisions and hitting rock bottom, was hard to watch, added Zendaya. She also revealed how she had sustained bruises and scars after filming the intense scene as well. “It was a very tough day. I mean, I beat myself up. I still have some scars on my legs and got quite a few bruises,” she told the portal.

Created by Sam Levinson, the teen drama follows the story of a group of high school students as they navigate their life, focussing on their traumas, friendship and personal challenges. Also starring Maude Apatow, Angus Cloud, Eric Dane, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Barbie Ferreira, Nika King, Storm Reid, Hunter Schafer, Algee Smith and Sydney Sweeney, the series was renewed for a third season recently.

Euphoria can be streamed on Disney+Hotstar.
