According to Variety, the show's ongoing second instalment is among the top-viewed on US platforms HBO and HBO Max and has received widespread social media traction. So, there is no wonder that HBO would want to make a third season happen.
"Sam, Zendaya, and the entire cast and crew of Euphoria have taken Season 2 to extraordinary heights, challenging narrative convention and form, while maintaining its heart. We couldn’t be more honoured to work with this gifted, wildly talented team or more excited to continue our journey with them into Season 3," Francesca Orsi, executive vice president, HBO Programming, said in a statement.
Euphoria follows 17-year-old Rue (Zendaya), a high schooler with drug addiction, and her classmates as they deal with love, loss and the pressures of being a teenager. In Season 2, the show saw her relapse after her girlfriend Jules (Hunter Schafer) leaves her. There is also a complicated love triangle brewing between Nate (Jacob Elordi), Maddy (Alexa Demie) and Cassie (Sydney Sweeney).
Nika King, Colman Domingo, Eric Dane, Angus Cloud, Barbie Ferreira, Maude Apatow, Javon Walton, Dominic Fike, Storm Reid, Austin Abrams, Algee Smith and Chloe Cherry also star in Season 2.
Euphoria is loosely inspired by the Israeli miniseries of the same name. Besides its popularity on social media, the show had at the 2020 Primetime Emmys won three awards including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Zendaya. This year, Euphoria won Outstanding Contemporary Makeup (Non-Prosthetic) and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.
