Anirban Bhattacharya, Sohini Sarkar and Arna Mukhopadhyay are gearing up for new theatre production, Ghare-Baire, for Kolkata-based theatre group Pancham Baidik. Based on Rabindranath Tagore’s seminal work, Arpita Ghosh is directing the production. The rehearsal for the play has started and it will be staged on August 22 at the group’s festival Tarpan, which is designed to pay tribute to the group’s matriarch, thespian Shaoli Mitra. Shaoli Mitra passed away in January 2022.
Anirban, Sohini, and Arna are the current cast of Athai, a Natadha production. Athai is also directed by Arna. All three are busy actors and are currently working on different projects. While talking about their schedule and rehearsal availability, Arpita told exclusively to us, “All three are skilled actors. Whatever time they will give to the rehearsals will be quality time. I have worked with Anirban in Karubasana and with Arna in Vitton. I have seen Sohini’s skill on stage. I am absolutely sure that they are perfect for the characters.” Pancham Baidik has earlier staged Ghare Baire but this one is different. “About 12 years ago we staged the play once. But this is a changed script with different interpretations. Also, the entire cast are crew members are different,” Arpita explained.
Tagore’s Ghare Baire delves into the lives of Nikhilesh, his wife Bimala and his freedom fighter friend Sandip. In the play, Arna will be seen as Nikhilesh, Sohini as Bimala, and Anirban will portray Sandip. In Aparna Sen’s 2019 film, Ghawre Bairey Aaj, a modern-day take on the same Tagore’s play, Anirban has portrayed the character of Nikhilesh, while Jisshu U Sengupta has played Sandip and Tuhina Das, Bimala.
Anirban has recently completed the shooting of his film Ballavpoorer Roopkotha and started the post-production of the film. Meanwhile, Arna and Sohini are currently shooting Arindam Sil’s Byomkesh Hatyamancha with Abir Chatterjee and Paoli. In fact, Sohini’s recent series with Rishav Basu, Srikanto, is currently streaming on Hoichoi.
