While Mollywood star Fahadh Faasil’s stocks have risen during the pandemic due to his stellar performances in OTT releases such as C U Soon, Joji and Malik, the actor hasn’t had a Malayalam theatrical release since February 2020. This wait could last longer, based on what we hear from the makers of his film Malayankunju.

Fahadh, who was part of Allu Arjun’s Telugu movie Pushpa and is now gearing up for the release of Kamal Haasan and Vijay Sethupathi’s Vikram, was scheduled to have his first Malayalam theatrical film with Malayankunju in February this year. The film’s release, which was assumed to have been pushed due to the Omicron threat in the beginning of the year, is yet to lock down a new date.

The film, which is directed by Sajimon Prabhakar and scripted by Mahesh Narayanan, will also mark AR Rahman’s comeback to Malayalam after three decades. While this is one of the highlights of the survival thriller, which revolves around a man caught in a landslide, it’s also the cause of the delay.

When OTTplay got in touch with a member from the team, the source said, “The film’s music is yet to be completed. That’s what is causing the delay. AR Rahman sir has completed about 50% of the film’s score and music. The rest is pending. He is also busy with his prior commitments and is currently at Cannes. The makers also don't want to push him, so they are willing to wait. Once the remaining work is over, the film will be ready for release.”

The delay has also caused many fans to speculate that Malayankunju could be heading for an OTT release. “The movie will most probably be a theatrical release,” said the source, adding that the final call will be taken only after the entire work is complete.

Meanwhile, Fahadh has wrapped up the second schedule of Akhil Sathyan’s Pachuvum Athbhutha Vilakkum, which is set for a Christmas release this year. The actor is currently shooting for Mari Selvaraj’s Tamil political thriller Maamannan, which also has Udayanidhi Stalin, Keerthy Suresh and Vadivelu in lead roles.
