Prominent Malayalam actress Santhy Balachandran, who plays a pivotal role in the recently-released film Gulmohar, says that she has learned a lot about acting on the set of the film by observing iconic actors.
The story of Gulmohar revolves around the Batra family, which resides in Delhi, and how one decision and a secret change everything.
The film stars Sharmila Tagore, Manoj Bajpayee, Amol Palekar, Simran, Suraj Sharma and Santhy in pivotal roles.
Santhy told OTTplay, "I want to be part of stories that are important; the length of the role does not matter to me. Perhaps that is why I made some unconventional choices. When I auditioned for Gulmohar, I was excited, because it was a chance to work with celebrated veteran actors of Indian cinema."
Santhy also admits that since she is not a trained actor, she has learned mostly on the job, by observing great performers, as well as going to workshops.
When asked to elaborate about her learnings, Santhy shared, "I think I learned a lot on how to use physicality in performances. There is a way you use your body, the movements, the use of space, and more such elements to tap into the energy of the character. I'm learning about physical theatre. Since I am not a trained actor, that side of performance I am learning by observing senior actors."
Santhy is known for acting in films like Tharangam, Jallikkattu, Paapam Cheyyathavar Kalleriyatte, and Randuper.
Gulmohar, directed by Rahul V Chittella, and produced by Star Studios, is available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar.
