American actor Edward Sonnenblick, born in San Francisco, spent a major part of his early years in North California. He worked as a chef, had a degree in botany but acting was always a constant in his life since childhood. It was Aamir Khan's Lagaan that prompted him to come to India in hope of a career in films and he fell in love with the country. Making a mark in ZEE's serial Jhansi Ki Rani, Edward cemented his position in Hindi cinema with appearances in Dostana, Manikarnika, Veere Di Wedding, Kesari and now SS Rajamouli's latest release RRR.
In a recent chat with us while talking of his 15-year-long career in Bollywood, we asked him what about the industry would he want to change? Pat came the reply, "Interestingly, you don't see the acting middle class in this industry. I am not sure why! Many amazing actors barely make a living or are just making an okay living. It's not easy to digest that you don't get a lot of money for the good work you do."
Edward further added, "Then, some superstars are fabulously wealthy and in between those two, I would say there's barely an acting middle class. There are actors whom you don't know by their name and can still recognise and they make a decent living, support their families in Hollywood. There's very little scope for that here. The reasons behind it are very complex but I hope to see that the middle-class get a decent pay in Bollywood someday."
In today's release RRR, Edward had played the role, incidentally named after himself, of a British officer. Talking about the part, he said, "I play this ruthless British officer whose job is to hunt down Bheem, a character who represents the force of nature, played by Jr NTR. My character's ambitions and profession puts him right at the centre of the conflict in the film. It's a character that's trying to keep the native population under control by whatever means necessary. It's funny that we share the same name."
RRR, directed by SS Rajamouli, also stars Jr NTR, Ram Charan, Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn and Samuthirakani in key roles.
