Fresh off the success of Sharafudheen’s Priyan Ottathilanu, its writers Anil Kurian and K Abhayakumar have teamed up for another entertainer titled Kunjammini’s Hospital, which is helmed by debutant Sanal V Devan.

The film, which went on floors in Irinjalakuda, Thrissur on Monday, has Indrajith Sukumaran, Nyla Usha, Prakash Raj, Baburaj and Sarayu in the lead. In an exclusive chat with OTTplay, Abhayakumar tells us, “It's a fun, fantasy film. We believe it’s something new from what we usually see in Malayalam.”

Is the film another feel-good attempt like Priyan Ottathilanu from the team? “This is totally different because Priyan was someone that we would find around us. This film’s story is set in 2-3 time periods,” says Abhayakumar. “Also, it doesn’t have the conventional hero-heroine concept. It’s got an ensemble cast and everyone has equal prominence. Each character’s backstory has humour, and how they come together and do what they do make for a fun experience.”

The movie also has Harishree Ashokan, Binu Pappu, Biju Sopanam, Prashanth Alexander, Mallika Sukumaran and James Eliya in supporting roles. On the hospital setting of the film, the scriptwriter says, “What we have tried with this film is to show we can approach things that would bring us negative emotions with a sense of humour. A hospital backdrop usually makes for things that make people sad – be it an accident, death or sickness; in this film, when you see these, it would bring a smile to your face.”

The team is also chuffed that they could zero in on a hospital that pretty much resembled what they conceived while writing. “In fact, a lot of people asked us if we had seen the location first and then wrote the story. We are glad we could find this location in Irinjalakuda as a lot of instances that happen in the film are based on true incidents,” concludes the filmmaker.
