Mollywood stars Asif Ali and Antony Varghese are all set to make their digital debuts with Jis Joy’s upcoming thriller Innale Vare, which also has Nimisha Sajayan and Reba Monica John in the lead. The filmmaker confirmed exclusively to OTTplay that the movie, based on the story by Bobby and Sanjay, will be direct-to-OTT release.

Talking to us, Jis, who had last helmed Kunchacko Boban’s Mohan Kumar Fans, says, “Innale Vare is a thriller with no songs. The post-production of the film is complete and the plan right now is to release it on OTTs next month.”

The filmmaker also confirms that the streaming platform has been locked but the deal is yet to be signed. On opting for an OTT release when theatres are operating at 100% capacity in Kerala, Jis says, “The producers of the film are also theatre owners, but if we have to release Innale Vare in theatres, the next available date is only in July. Till then, two movies have been slotted for every Friday. So, even if we wait for a free Friday, there will be other releases too. We thought it wasn’t necessary to wait for such a long time.”

Ask him if the movie was designed to be made during the pandemic and he says, “We had actually landed on the story of Innale Vare even before releasing Mohan Kumar Fans. The story idea originated from an unexpected call from Kunchacko Boban. I shared this with Bobby and Sanjay, and we developed the story within a week. So, everything came together quickly.”

The film has Asif playing an actor, while Nimisha’s character works at Infopark. Reba plays Asif’s romantic interest in the film, which has Antony portraying a technician.

On shifting his genre from feel-good movies to a thriller with the movie, Jis says, “My first film Bicycle Thieves was a thriller and after that all the films that came my way were of the same genre. That’s why I decided to do Sunday Holiday and Vijay Superum Pournamiyum. I wasn’t deliberately doing feel-good movies, it’s just that I picked projects that I found interesting to direct.”

The director also says he reads the trolls about him being synonymous to feel-good films. “I enjoy them and also laugh at them now because if Innale Vare works out as we expect it to, I am sure that image of mine will change.”
