Exclusive! Karnasubarner Guptodhon box office: Abir, Arjun, and Ishaa-starrer treasure hunt goes steady to become a blockbuster

Dhrubo Banerjee’s Karnasubarner Guptodhon – the third instalment of the Guptodhon franchise with Abir Chatterjee, Ishaa Saha, and Arjun Chakrabarty – is going steady at the box office. Out of the four Durga Puja releases, including Dev-Prosenjit Chatterjee's Kacher Manush, Parambrata Chatterjee’s Boudi Canteen, and Chandreyee Ghosh’s Mission Everest, the Sonada adventure has bagged the biggest box office share so far. 

According to unofficial sources, Karnasubarner Guptodhon has minted approximately Rs 4 cr in five days. The official figures are expected to come after a seven-day run. Upon release, the film opened to positive reviews from critics. With Puja vacation around the film also saw a large footfall in the opening week. According to sources close to the makers, the film had a budget of approximately Rs 2.5 cr and within less than a week, it has managed to recover the cost and is now heading towards a blockbuster.

Ujjal Roy of PVR Cinemas stated that the many shows were houseful in the past five days. “The occupancy never went below 90% in our auditorium across Kolkata. While Vikram Veda has also done well, the Sonada adventure is the biggest among the Bengali releases,” he said. 

Now just multiplexes, the film did well in the single screen theatres also. Satadeep Saha of Ajanta Cinema said, “Along with Vikram Veda, Karnasubarner Guptodhon saw a very good response. We saw multiple houseful shows of these two films. Meanwhile, Kacher Manush also drew houseful shows.”  

The initial success of Karnasubarner Guptodhon brought a smile to the producer’s face. Talking about the success, Shrikant Mohta said, “The film has overtaken the figures of top films not just in the recent year but in the recent decade. It feels amazing to see the cinema lovers visiting the theatres again and making the film superhit right from its starting week. I am extremely overwhelmed to see the appreciation and love from the audience. It’s huge.”

Even the earlier films of the Sonada franchise – Guptodhoner Sandhane and Durgeshgarher Guptodhon – were also big hits. The treasure hunt adventures of history professor Subarna Sen, aka Sonada (Abir), along with his associates Abir Lal Roy (Arjun) and his girlfriend Jhinuk (Ishaa) are liked by youngsters and elders alike. However, the third film is being touted to be the biggest hit so far.
