Exclusive! Kunal Kemmu on Pop Kaun?: Comedy is the most palatable genre

Actor Kunal Kemmu is gearing up for the release of the comedy web series Pop Kaun?in which he plays the central character. The audience will get to see him in a completely new avatar, and speaking about the genre, Kunal said that comedy is the most-watched genre because it is a natural human tendency to watch something funny to get a break from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The story of the show revolves around Sahil, a young man who would brag as a child, saying, "Jaanta hai mera baap kaun hai?" Eventually he realises that he actually does not know who his father is. Thus, a hilarious journey begins, and how — or if at all — he finds the answer sets the basic storyline of the show.

In a special conversation with OTTplay, Kunal said, "I think comedy is the most palatable genre and it caters to everyone. Generally, after a long working day, people want to unwind by watching something, and 99% of the time, they opt for comedy or something that is lighthearted. As an actor, even though I love performing intense roles - because that excites the performer within me — when I go back home, I look for something easy to watch. Many of us want to take out time to watch a serious film, but comedy is something that one can watch even in parts, by taking breaks in between. Be it comedy films like Housefull or Golmaal, you can watch 20 minutes and go back to work after that."

Citing an example from his childhood, Kunal shared, "I remember when I was in school, I was allowed to watch a film only for an hour. So, I would watch happy films like Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke, and the next day, I would rewind and continue watching from where I had stopped the previous day. It was such fun! I am hopeful that with our new show, gates will open on OTT platforms for comedy-specific content."

Pop Kaun? is directed by Farhad Samji and also stars Johnny Lever, Nupur Sanon, the late Sathish Kaushik, Saurabh Shukla, Chunky Panday, Jamie Lever, Rajpal Yadav, and Ashwini Kalsekar. 

It is slated to release on Disney+ Hotstar on March 17.
