Rachana Inder’s introduction to Kannada cinema – Love Mocktail – had her play a chirpy, talkative youngster, which then led to her getting offers for a bunch of similar characters. Despite the fact that she does look fairly young and, hence, apt for the routine bubbly girl characters, Rachana chose to steer clear of repeating herself. “To my luck, one of the films that I did after Love Mocktail was Harikathe Alla Girikathe, which saw me in a drastically different role. After Harikathe…, filmmakers have been approaching me for some really nice roles, like, for instance, Love 360, in which I played a character with an intellectual issue,” she says, adding, “I do not want to be seen as a glam element in my films; I’d rather have filmmakers tap into the artiste in me and so far, Harikathe… and Love360 have been among the best opportunities for that.”

Her upcoming slate also continues this trend, says Rachana. “I have three films in different stages of production. But first up, there is 4n6, in which I play a forensic investigator, involving serial killers and a bunch of murders that I have to solve. The title is a combination of the number of people who are killed, my character’s name Nayesha and the number of suspects. Even though the narrative revolves around killings, it is not very violent and will keep audiences glued to their seats,” says Rachana.

The film has been directed by newcomer Darshan Srinivas. “The entire narrative follows my character as she goes about piecing together the mystery. I think it has turned out beautifully, because the director has a clear vision about how he wants to present the film. It’s a very compact film, I’d say, which will be all of 1 hour and 20 minutes, at the most. His idea was to get to the point from the start and not have unnecessary songs or other cinematic tropes that could create a lag. Of course, there will be music, but it will be restricted to montage songs and background,” she says. Shooting for 4n6 is nearly done, says Rachana, who has only 2-3 days’ worth of work pending.
