Parambrata Chatterjee is set to direct a period piece based on the famous Alipore Bomb Case of 1908. Produced by Rana Sarkar, the film, Barud O Adalat: The Alipore Bomb Case will go to the floors next year around February. However, Shibasish Bandyopadhyay and Sourav Chakraborty are currently researching the topic. Shibasish will pen the script. The film will focus on the historical courtroom drama of the arguments that Chittaranjan Das put forward to save Aurobindo Ghosh.
In 1908, Alipore Bomb Case saw the trial of several members of Anushilam Samiti, under charges of waging war against the Government of the British Raj. Aurobindo Ghosh and his brother Barin Ghosh were among the charged members. All the accused nationalists were apprehended in the Presidency Jail, Alipore. Before the trial, crown witness Narendranath Goswami was shot dead by Kanailal Dutta and Satyendranath Bose – two other nationalists – within the jail premises. The death of the crown witness collapsed the case against Aurobindo.
The chronology of the event has a strong thrill element in it. According to our sources, the courtroom drama that took place between the magistrate and Chittaranjan Das will also be recreated in the film. While many argue that since Chittaranjan Das was a famous lawyer, he was hired for Aurobindo Ghosh. However, in reality, Chittaranjan’s family was bankrupt during that time and he was yet to become famous. According to several historians, he volunteered and took up the case. Parambrata’s film will delve into all such intriguing historical facts.
The research and the writing for the film are on and Parambrata has confirmed that the film can only begin by next year. The cast, crew and locations are yet to be decided. Rana Sarkar said, “We have planned to celebrate the 75th year of independence with this film. We have worked on several period pieces and I am sure our team will execute it nicely.”
