The first look of Prithviraj Sukumaran and Indrajith Sukumaran-starrer Theerpu was revealed on Sunday and it promises to be another genre bender. Considering that it comes from the team of Kammarasambhavam duo Rathish Ambat and Murali Gopy, the audience must expect nothing less.

In an exclusive chat with OTTplay, Rathish breaks down what the anticipated film is about. With the poster having the tagline, ‘Verdict and beyond’, and a statue of Lady Justice, ask him if Theerpu is a courtroom drama and the director says, “No. It’s an allegory, a proper drama satire. There’s a story within the story; as in when a character is narrating a tale, there will be another story within that. It has a format that is entirely different from Kammarasambhavam.”

Apart from Indrajith and Prithviraj, the movie also has Vijay Babu, Siddique, Isha Talwar, Saiju Kurup and Hannah Reji Koshy in pivotal roles. Though the film will have a different format, the director says that each character will share screen space with others. “The story happens in the present era but there is a flashback portion. The film also touches upon the themes of friendships, politics and history,” he says.

The movie, which is produced by Vijay Babu, Murali Gopy and Rathish Ambat, went on floors in 2021. “It has taken us about one and half years to complete the film,” explains the filmmaker, adding that they would confirm its release platform soon.

Indrajith had earlier told OTTplay that the movie has dark humour and he plays a cop in it. The actor also said that Prithviraj and him don’t have too many scenes together but the movie has come out well and it was an enjoyable experience shooting the film, which is different from previous Murali Gopy scripts such as Tiyaan and Lucifer.
