While over the years there have been reports of Academy Award-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty making his Malayalam directorial debut with a Mammootty-starrer, OTTplay has exclusively learnt that the ace technician is all set to foray into direction with a movie titled Otta starring Asif Ali in the lead.

The film, which will be produced by Children Reunited LLP and Resul Pookutty Productions, is set to be officially announced on April 13 in Kochi. Touted to be a straight Malayalam film, the film also has Arjun Ashokan and another actor as part of its supporting cast. The teaser of the movie featuring the actors has already been shot and will be released at the April 13 launch function, a source from the team tells exclusively to OTTplay.

In 2019, Resul had starred in a full-length Malayalam project titled The Sound Story, which had him play a sound engineer recording the Thrissur Pooram for the benefit of the visually impaired. The Oscar-winner undertook the venture of recording the festival, featuring over 300 artistes over a course of 17 days.

While The Sound Story was released in several languages, the plan is to make Otta in Malayalam, considering the pan-Indian attention Mollywood films have been garnering off late, says the source.

Incidentally, there were reports that the award-winning sound designer was to make his directorial debut with a Hindi movie titled Sarpakal, which was also to have Sushant Singh Rajput as part of the cast. Resul, who had recently collaborated in films such as Pushpa, Radhe Shyam and Shabaash Mithu, will also be working in Blessy’s Aadujeevitham.

Meanwhile, Asif Ali has a host of projects lined up. Apart from Nishanth Sattu’s A Ranjith Cinema, Sethu’s Maheshum Marutiyum and Jeethu Joseph’s Kooman, the actor on Sunday had announced that he has signed Ratheesh K Rajan’s Adavu.
