Ronit Roy is one of the most popular faces of the television world. The actor is now spreading his arc towards the OTT platforms as well. After working in Alt Balaji’s Kehne Ko Humsafar Hain and Hostages on Disney+ Hotstar, the actor is back on the digital platform with Candy on Voot opposite Richa Chadha.
In the latest chat with OTTplay, the actor shares his experience working with the director Ashish Shukla, Richa and other cast members, the fun he had at the sets gathering around a bonfire for a musical night and why OTT is the right place to be on. He also spoke about his upcoming projects and more. Excerpts:
Talking about Candy and what makes it special, the actor says, “There are a lot of things. First, the storyline is very vivid and intriguing and it’s really an interesting crime thriller, which also speaks about relationships. Second, all the cast and crew are just amazing.”
The show has emotions, thrills, crime and social issues which are very relevant to the world today. "All the characters in the show are fighting the demons that are inside them and in the outside world. I choose to believe that if the character is interesting, then the show becomes interesting and that’s what happening here. I’m grateful to be a part of such a great ensemble, where we have Richa (Chadha), Manu Rishi Chadha, Gopal Dutt, Vijayant Kohli and so many young talents," he further says.
The objective of Candy, he says, is not to stand out but to make an interesting and gripping show. It's the viewers who make a show stand out. “What is different about this show is that it has a huge canvas and it has been shot in a very grand way like a motion picture and that’s a huge card of credit for the show. Candy is just not based on your regular 'isko kisne mara' concept but it’s really different and an intelligent show. So, when we put all this together, it makes our show a little hatke,” Ronit said while praising the series.
Talking about his experience working with the director Ashish Shukla, the Kasautii Zindagi Kay actor says, “Ashish is really talented and good at his job. We were shooting Candy just after the success of his last show Undekhi. There was a certain confidence that we like to have in our directors, which gives you clarity in your mind.” But the actor says it was fun working with him too. “There was a lot of fun on the set. Ashish and the young actors like Nakul (Sahdev) used to play music offset at night when we all used to gather around a bonfire because it was pretty cold over there,” Ronit reveals about the set.
The series is based on a folk tale and a fictional demon called Masaand. But the actor says he doesn’t believe a lot in these things as he hasn’t seen a ghost yet. “There are people who say that they have seen one and I do believe in spirits. However, the demon in the story is more like an urban legend,” he says.
The series is out on the OTT platform Voot now. The actor feels these platforms are a good field to be on right now as there’s a slew of shows and films that are being made on OTT. He highly recommends everyone to watch Shershah, which stars Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani. He says, "It’s a great time not only for actors but also for technicians, producers and others. Because of this new industry, employment has grown so much. Now the actors have a lot of options and can choose their work as per their liking, something that fits into their arc that they are trying to traverse.” However, he refused to comment on the censorship on the OTT platforms.
Ronit has worked with Balaji Telefilms for several years, first on television and then on the digital platform. When we asked the actor about his next collaboration with Ekta Kapoor, he replied that there’s is nothing on the cards right now and it has been a while. “I love Balaji Telefilms and Ekta. I love working with them and they are like family to me. I’m always here, just a phone call away and I look forward to working with them soon,” he said.
Currently, the actor is awaiting the release of Shamshera that stars Ranbir Kapoor and Vaani Kapoor. The film is made under the banner of Yash Raj Films and is directed by Karan Malhotra.
