Srijit Mukherji’s tryst with OTT content continues. After directing two of the four stories in Netflix’s anthology Ray, the filmmaker is gearing up to start a new webseries with Zee5. In fact, the director’s Pankaj Tripathi-starrer Sherdil: The Pilibhit Saga, which is currently running in theatres, will soon be released on Netflix. Meanwhile, the director is also gearing up for the release of his sports drama, Shabaash Mithu, which will hit the theatre on July 15. Based on the life and career of Mithali Raj, the film features Taapsee Pannu in the lead.
According to sources, the preliminary talks between Zee5 officials and the director have taken place recently. Meanwhile, Srijit remained tightlipped about the project. When asked about the new venture, he told OTTplay, “It is too early to say anything.”
Srijit’s Sherdil will be dropped on Netflix soon. “It will take four to 12 weeks after the theatrical release for Sherdil to be available on the streaming platform,” he said. The Pankaj Tripathi-starrer jungle saga has received mixed reviews from critics. Earlier, while talking about the reception, Srijit told us that he expected a better response as the film is ‘close’ to his heart. “The film got my average rating of three out of five stars. It is decent, I would think. Personally, I expected more as the film is very close to my heart,” he told us.
Srijit debuted on Hindi OTT with the Netflix anthology Ray. Along with Abhishek Chaubey and Vasan Bala, he directed four shorts, based on Satyajit Ray’s short stories.
Srijit’s Forget Me Not is based on Bipin Chowdhury-r Smritibhrom and Bahurupiya is based on Bahurupi. Meanwhile, Abhishek has directed Hungama Hai Kyon Barpa, which is based on Barin Bhowmick er Byaram and Vasan Bala’s Spotlight is based on a story of the same title.
