Malayalam stars Tovino Thomas and Keerthy Suresh’s latest release Vaashi, which hit theatres on June 17, has been picked up by a leading OTT platform to begin streaming after its theatrical run. The digital rights of the film, which is helmed by actor-turned-filmmaker Vishnu G Raghav, was snapped up for a record price.

A senior source from the film’s production house Revathy Kalamandirr exclusively tells OTTplay that the movie’s OTT rights has been sold to Netflix. “We wanted the movie to be released in theatres. But we also got a good deal for its streaming rights. Vaashi’s OTT rights were sold for Rs 10 crore,” the source says.

The movie, which has Tovino and Keerthy playing lawyers, is a family-cum-courtroom drama that also marks the latter’s comeback in Malayalam in a full-length lead role. The film revolves around the duo battling each other in a legal case and its ramifications in their personal lives. Apart from the lead actors, Vaashi also has Anu Mohan, Baiju Santosh, Rony David, G Suresh Kumar and Anagha Narayanan in pivotal roles.

Shot last year and early 2022 in Thiruvananthapuram, the film also marked the comeback production of Revathy Kalamandirr, which has produced films such as Kashmeeram and Aaraam Thampuraan. The movie is expected to release on Netflix in July 2022.

While Netflix hasn’t picked up any direct-to-OTT Malayalam films after Tovino’s Minnal Murali, the platform has been buying the streaming rights after theatrical releases. Tovino’s Dear Friend, Mammootty’s CBI 5: The Brain, Asif Ali’s Kuttavum Shikshayum and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Jana Gana Mana were some of its recent acquisitions. Kuttavum Shikshayam, which has Asif Ali in the lead and is a realistic investigative thriller, will begin streaming on the platform from June 24. The Rajeev Ravi directorial also has Sharafudheen and Sunny Wayne as part of the cast.
