Tovino Thomas is on a roll! The Malayalam actor’s latest release Thallumaala, which grossed over Rs 70 crore in worldwide box office, recently dropped on Netflix and has already broken into the Top 3 most-watched films in India this week.

The movie, directed by Khalid Rahman, is also Tovino’s first all-out entertainer, offering him a chance to try his hand at dance, singing as well as a few ‘mass’ action sequences. The wedding scene especially where his character sits royally after a brawl arguably drew the loudest applause in theatres.

Though Tovino’s previous ‘mass’ avatar in Kalki didn’t quite hit mark, the Minnal Murali star in an exclusive chat with OTTplay recently revealed how satisfying it was to perform similar sequences in Thallumaala.

“I’m learning with every film. I have been polishing myself by doing several kinds of films over the years. So, there is a learning happening. The kind of learning is also different. You don’t study the same thing in your Class 10 as you did in your kindergarten. So, if you compare how I was at the start of my career, I believe I have progressed leaps and bounds, and I know there is still scope for improvement,” he said.

Tovino further explained that it’s “not a huge jump either”. “I climb step by step. I don’t act the same way as I did back when movies such as Kalki released. Today, even how I take care of my body is different from the past. During Edakkad Battalion, I was 90 kg but now I am 74kg. I would say I had eating disorder back then and workout routine didn’t have the discipline I have now,” he said. “These days, I wake up at 5:30 am and practise kalarippayattu. So, whatever I am learning for a film, I don’t forget after wrapping up its shoot.”

Tovino, who is currently shooting for Dr Biju’s Adrishya Jalakangal, also has Ajayante Randam Moshanam and Nadigar Thilakam coming up.
