A look at Fahadh Faasil’s recent filmography will reveal that the Malayalam star hasn’t done a comedic role since he starred in Sathyan Anthikad’s Njan Prakashan. His upcoming release Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum will once again have him exploring humour and this time with Sathyan Anthikad’s son Akhil, at the helm.

The debutant filmmaker, who has also scripted the movie, tells OTTplay in an exclusive chat, says that Fahadh trusts and this could be because they have worked together in Oru Indian Pranayakatha and Njan Prakashan, in which Akhil was an associate director.

“He knows me well and I have seen his lighter side. The characters that you see in Oru Indian Pranayakatha and Njan Prakashan is how he is in real life,” says Akhil. “I have always felt that whenever people cast him roles, because he is an extremely talented actor, they give him complex, intense roles. But he explores humour roles equally well and not many people have tasked him with such characters.”

Incidentally, in the previous decade, Fahadh hasn’t done too many roles that had room for humour except for the Sathyan Anthikad directorials and Maheshinte Prathikaaram. “Apart from achan and me, I don’t think anyone has even tried because the first thought is that if it’s Fahadh, then he can handle complex emotional roles. But that’s not just the case. He can pull off any role,” says Akhil.

The director also says that Fahadh’s greatest skill while playing common men is how he can set them apart. “In Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum, he has handled the character like Mohanlal did in achan’s movies,” says Akhil, explaining, “It’s difficult to pull off such simple roles, but he brings a lot of variations in terms of expressions and body language. For this movie, he didn’t have to do any preparation. He just had to turn up and perform because he was comfortable with the character and space. He was enjoying it and I am hoping that will reflect with the audience too.”

Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum revolves around Fahadh’s character Pachu and the changes he brings in the lives of three women, essayed by Viji Venkatesh, Dhwani Rajesh and Anjana Jayaprakash. The film will hit theatres on April 28.
