Fahadh Faasil’s Malayankunju to have a direct release on Amazon Prime Video? Source reveals deal not yet done

The wait for the release of Fahadh Faasil’s Malayankunju just got longer. Recent reports suggested that the makers have finalised a direct-to-OTT release for the survival thriller, which is directed by debutant Sajimon Prabhakar and scripted by Mahesh Narayanan.

Rumours suggested that the team has locked a deal with Amazon Prime Video for a direct-to-OTT release on Onam. However, when OTTplay got in touch with a source close to the film’s production team, the source said, “We initially started off the film hoping for it to be a direct OTT release on Amazon Prime Video. However, since then there had been a lot of delays with Fahadh getting injured during the shoot, the second pandemic lockdown and then technical delays.”

The team also had to wait on AR Rahman after the latter was roped in to compose the music for the film, which revolves around a man who is trapped after a landslide. Though the makers had announced a theatrical release date of February 2022 earlier this year, the plans were further dashed after the Omicron threat.

“So, we had to wait for six months before we got the music, which we eventually did last week. Now, the work for the final output is going on,” says the source. “The producers want to release the movie in theatres but a final decision will be taken once the movie is ready.”

Fahadh is yet to have a theatrical release in Malayalam since the pandemic. His previous Malayalam movie to hit cinema halls was Anwar Rasheed’s Trance in February 2020. Since then, he has had several career-defining OTT releases including C U Soon, Joji and Malik. Fahadh was also part of two of the biggest hits from the South – Allu Arjun’s Pushpa and Kamal Haasan’s Vikram – that hit theatres in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Malayankunju is produced by Fahadh’s father and filmmaker Fazil.
