Family Drama released on July 26 on the back up positive reviews from a premiere, but that did not convert into footfalls

It’s barely a week since Family Drama, a dark comedy starring Abhay, Sindhu Sreenivasa Murthy, Rekha Kudligi, Poornachandra Mysore, among others, hit theatres. And now, the film is already ending its theatrical run. Debutant director Akarsh HP’s film, which had opened to largely positive reviews, failed to get footfalls going and, therefore, does not get an opportunity to try and get the momentum going and ensure a second week run.
On July 31, the team of Family Drama, including Akarsh, Abhay and Sindhu, were a part of an X space discussion about the film, and how, despite starting their promotional campaigns way back in April, they’d failed to grab enough eyeballs. The team also admitted to being constrained in terms of marketing budget, given that it’s an indie film, but said that they’d done as much that was possible within their limitations. The team also does not see merit in sustaining the film in theatres by paying rentals that they will not be able to recover.
In fact, during the conversation, Sindhu had highlighted a dangerous trend of films not only being classified as multiplex films – those meant for niche audiences – but also as OTT film, which do not merit a visit to theatres. Given the state of affairs, OTT platforms engage in any business talk only after a theatrical release and the outcome of this discussion hinges on how well the film performed during this stint in theatres.
According to sources, Family Drama does not have an OTT partner on board and given its poor run at the box office, getting one might be dicey, unless, of course, they manage a pay-per-view or rental deal with, say, a Prime Video. The source adds that the team of Family Drama is contemplating means of reaching maximum audience and that there will be an official announcement shortly.
Family Drama, meanwhile, is fun film revolving around a family of four, where the death of the head of the family forces the other three to pursue certain courses of action in the hope of making a quick buck.
