The first on-screen meeting of Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald, played by Jude Law and Mads Mikkelsen, respectively, is teased in a new trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, the third film in the Fantastic Beasts trilogy. In what appears to be a restaurant, Law's Dumbledore sits across from Grindelwald.

Dumbledore seeks to prevent the Dark Lord from carrying out his intentions to abolish the International Statute of Secrecy and dominate the entire world, which includes both wizards and muggles. Grindelwald counters that it was also Dumblebore's ambition at one point. "Because I was in love with you," admits the future Hogwarts headmaster.

The past tense is significant because it signifies that something no longer exists. The entire sequence could be a vision, as the entire room is consumed in flames.

Ardent Potter fans believe Dumblebore is gay and had a love affair with Grindelwald. They met in Godric's Hollow, where they were both born just a few years apart. Grindelwald had been expelled from the Durmstrang Wizarding School for troubling experiments. Both were, at the time, two of the most brilliant young magicians, and they fell in love. They also had a fascination with the Deathly Hallows.

At one point, Dumbledore became disillusioned with Grindelwald's destructive views, and the two fell out.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is part of the Wizarding World, a fictitious realm that comprises Harry Potter films, books, and other media. It is a prequel series that focuses on Eddie Redmayne's Newt Scamander, a magizoologist, Dumbledore, and their allies as they battle Grindelwald's armies.

In the third film, Grindelwald is emboldened by the arrival of Dumbledore's younger brother, Aurelius Dumbledore, who is an Obscurial and, as a result of his abilities, is a formidable foe to his older brother. To resist the threat, Dumbledore establishes his "First Army," which is a precursor to Harry Potter's Dumbledore's Army. Except that this army is under his command and not just a nod to him.
