After having made his Bollywood debut as a child actor with the widely extremely appreciated and well received film ‘Udaan’, Rajat Barmecha’s career literally ‘took off’ from there. Hailing from a family which has absolutely no connections in the showbiz industry, Rajat has managed to achieve whatever he has today on his own merit and the seamless support offered to him by his father.
On the occasion of Father’s Day, OTTplay caught up with the actor for an exclusive interview.
Hi Rajat! How would you describe your bond with your father over the years?
I think my bond with my father is very special. It is the ideal father-son relationship that we share because it's funny how in every film of mine like in ‘Udaan’, I had a father who was very strict and didn’t want me to follow my dreams. Same with the recent film ‘Kacchey Limbu’ where my father wants me to do something else and then I end up taking a job and in real life, I think it's completely the opposite.
Your father supported your dreams of becoming an actor?
My father has always supported me and encouraged me to pursue my dreams. My father is the first person who has always motivated me to even follow the most bizarre dreams of mine. He would let me just go for it and say remember one thing that you should always give your heart and soul into what you're doing and then everything will take care of itself.
Carry on Rajat…
It just doesn't matter what the outcome is, and even when I wanted to become an actor, I think he was one of the biggest support systems I had. So, I think my bond with my father is great and over the years it's just grown from strength to strength. I'm 34 now. The older I'm getting and the older he's getting; the difference is just becoming very little there now. There are things that he can talk to me and there are suggestions and advice that he would ask me and we both are close to each other it’s important for him to know what I feel about the situation it could be related to anything to do with the household or otherwise just his personal things. I think he really would be very appreciative when I would give him any advice. So, it is really nice of my father I think our bond is great and very strong.
How are you planning to celebrate Father’s Day?
It’s going to be me and my father and my mom coming later, my grandfather is also going to be with us. So, I think it's all three generations coming together and we are going to chill together. We might just go out for a meal or we may just order in and my brother is also there so we all all four will chill and I guess the timings just matched.
What are the qualities of your father which inspires you the most?
There are so many of them I would not lie. My father is also human. And I am also human. So, we have qualities that we may not like in each other, but that's us being humans. But there are endless qualities in my father that I love. I think one of the biggest qualities that I can think of at the top of my mind right now is how he treats women. It is one of the nicest qualities of my father despite all arguments like discomforts in a relationship. I think I've always seen my dad respect women no matter who those women are…they feel very comfortable and very safe with my father and I really respect that quality of my father. I look up to him and I would love that quality to be with me.
What do you miss the most about your father when you are away from him?
It’s a very funny thing for me to say, but, like all the small little things which our generation take it for granted but my father always keeps a very close interest in all those small things in our household. When I am there with him, I think I am dependent on him.
How your father's encouragement has shaped your career as an actor?
Big time! Big credit goes to him as, its only because of him that I am in this profession.
