Eminent filmmaker, four times National Award-winner Tarun Majumdar breathed his last on July 4 at SSKM Hospital, Kolkata. He was 91. The director started his journey with Chaowa Pawa in 1959 with Uttam Kumar, and Suchitra Sen. He offered one after the other tasteful, insightful and yet commercially successful films to the Bengali audience. The director was conferred Padma Shri in 1990.
He has been suffering from kidney ailments and diabetes for a long time. He was admitted to the hospital with a number of complications, including breathing difficulties, on June 14. He responded to the treatment later last week. However, another bout of secondary infection on Saturday made things complicated. Despite the effort of the five-member medical team led by Dr Somnath Kundu and Dr Soumitra Ghosh, Tarun Majumdar failed to respond to the treatment.
Tarun Majumdar’s Balika Badhu in 1967, Kuheli in 1971, Shriman Prithviraj in 1973, Dadar Kirti in 1980, Bhalobasa Bhalobasa in 1985 and Apan Amar Apan in 1990 are some of his huge blockbusters in the industry. His 2003 film Alo with Rituparna Sengupta and Abhishek Chatterjee is marked as one of the most memorable films in the actress’s career. In 2018, Tarun Majumdar made a comeback with Rituparna and Silajit in the lead. He made 20 films with his wife, veteran actress Sandhya Roy. Along with Tapas Pal, he made a number of successful films.
