Just when you feel you have had enough rom- coms or emotional movies on your list, more serious films about killers and assassins could just be the right antidote. And if watching spy conspiracies or timeless assassin thrillers is your cup of tea, then this podcast is surely going to be a treat.

The Mechanic

The Mechanic is a 2011 American action thriller movie, a remake of the 1972 movie of the same name. The star cast includes Jason Statham as Arthur Bishop, Donald Sutherland as Harry McKenna, Ben Foster as Steve McKenna. The story follows Bishop, a kingpin assassin adheres to strict code, detachment, and precision. But, after his close friend and mentor Harry is murdered, Bishop ropes in Harry’s son, Steve, into his trade, and seeks vengeance on those who killed Harry.

The Day of the Jackal

The Day of the Jackal is a 1973 political thriller film starring Edward Fox, Adrien Cayla-Legrand, Michael Lonsdale. This globally acclaimed movie was nominated for BAFTA, Golden Globe and Oscar Awards. The plot is about an infamous hitman known as Jackal, hired by an underground French paramilitary group, to assassinate President Charles de Gaulle. Meanwhile, a vigilant Parisian police detective is on Jackal’s tail in order to foil his plan and bring him to justice.

JFK

A 1991 American epic political thriller film is adapted from the 1988 book, On the Trail of the Assassins by Jim Garrison, and is directed by Oliver Stone. The movie stars Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman, Kevin Bacon, and Tommy Lee Jones. The film caught up in controversy at the time of its release where American newspapers accused Stone of taking liberties with historical facts of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The movie follows the extensive investigation into the assassination which was led by New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison as he discovered a hidden conspiracy behind the assassination.

The Accountant

The Accountant is a 2016 American action-thriller film starring Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, J. K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal, John Lithgow and Jeffrey Tambor. The story revolves around an autistic person Christian Wolff, who is a math genius, and is involved in his not-so-legal bookkeeping business. When the FBI learns about him, he decides to work for a legitimate client to misguide them.

Collateral

A 2004 American neo-noir action thriller film starring Tom Cruise as Vincent and Jamie Foxx as Max Durocher. The movie follows an LA cab driver Max who is offered a hefty fare for driving to five locations, by his customer Vincent. But Max soon finds himself in a nail-biting situation when he learns that Vincent is an assassin working on a mission. Max attempts to stop Vincent as the FBI starts looking for them.

Sicario

A 2015 action thriller movie, directed by the brilliant Denis Villeneuve, includes a star-studded ensemble of Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, and Daniel Kaluuya. The film was nominated for Academy Award and BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography and Best Film. The story follows FBI agent Kate Macer who is assigned by a government task force to investigate the war against drugs and the steep rise in body count between the borders of the USA and Mexico.

Looper

An American science fiction action thriller that was screened at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival starring Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Emily Blunt in the lead. The movie depicts a time travel machine that is set in a future world of 2074, when a Crime syndicate entity decides to get rid of someone, it sends the target back to the past in 2044 to get eliminated by a hitman named Joe. But things begin to unravel when Joe learns that the syndicate has sent his future self back in time to be assassinated.
