Apocalyptic movies would not seem like something that could ever invoke a sense of fun, but Apple TV’s new original film is set to knock those assumptions out of the water. The streaming giant recently dropped the trailer of Finch, starring Tom Hanks, and the doomsday never looked this jolly.

The science-fiction drama tells the story of a diseased inventor, seemingly the last survivor on Earth after a disastrous solar flare wipes out the population. He makes a gruelling journey to escape a dangerous storm, along with his team - a dog and an android, he built.

The trailer for the film gives a straightforward explanation of the premise of the same, along with some delightful and touching moments of genuine connection between Hanks’ character, named Finch, and his found, or more appropriately built, family. The conviction of human resilience shines through some of the sequences. We see the last man on Earth clutch on to the comfort of the mundane despite his situation; as he goes about caring for his dog and squabbles with his robotic friend, just as any normal person would do. The last lines where Finch says that they will do it together and the android saying that it believes in him, hints at a poignant story of friendship and devotion, even in a setting as dire as a life or death situation.

Directed by Miguel Sapochnik, known for his work on Game of Thrones, the film also features Caleb Landry Jones, Samira Wiley, Laura Harrier and Skeet Ulrich. Its initial release, planned to be in US theatres, was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

The film will be released on Apple TV+ on November 5.
