The first teaser clip of Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio was released by Netflix recently. This life-long passion project of the filmmaker is his newest film after the award-winning Shape of Water.

This retelling of the classic Carlo Collodi tale takes place during the time of Benito Mussolini’s fascist regime in 1930s Italy. Pinocchio (Gregory Mann) is a real wooden boy created by a wooden carver Geppetto (David Bradley). His father loves him even though his son does not always obey him.

The cast also includes Ewan McGregor (as Cricket), Tilda Swinton (as Turquoise Fairy) along with ate Blanchett, Finn Wolfhard, Christoph Waltz, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, and Burn Gorman.

This stop-motion film marks del Toro's first animated directorial and also his maiden feature film collaboration with Netflix. He will share the credit with Mark Gustafson known for A Claymation Christmas Special, Meet the Raisins!, Fantastic Mr Fox, and A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas. Variety reports that Netflix will release the film in December 2022.

Patrick McHale has co-written the script with del Toro. The music is composed by Alexandre Desplat whose recent projects include The French Dispatch, The Midnight Sky and Little Women.

"No art form has influenced my life and my work more than animation and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio," del Toro had previously said about the film when it was announced in 2018.
