Flashback Friday: When Shahid Kapoor said Ranbir Kapoor could’ve pulled off Kaminey but not Ranveer Singh

Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh shared an interesting equation even before the two worked on Padmaavat. An incident on Koffee With Karan (airing in 2014) raised eyebrows regarding their bond. This was when Shahid Kapoor said that Ranbir Kapoor and not Ranveer Singh could pull off Kaminey, which is one of Shahid’s iconic movies.

Back in 2011, fresh out Band Baaja Baarat’s success, Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma were promoting Ladies vs Ricky Bahl on Koffee With Karan. That is when Karan Johar asked Ranveer which role of a contemporary actor could he reprise. Interestingly, the actor picked Shahid’s Kaminey, which was one of Kabir Singh famed actor’s finest performances till that year.

Ranveer even asked if Shahid can be considered among the contemporary actors and when KJo agreed, he named Kaminey. His response met with Karan’s judgement too but Ranveer stuck to his statement.

Later in 2014, Karan asked Shahid about his views on Ranveer wanting to reprise his character in Kaminey. Interestingly, Shahid heard Ranbir Kapoor and said that the Sanju actor could pull off Kaminey and probably do the role better than him. It is to be noted that Ranbir had proven his worth in the same year through Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar, which was a movie that transformed his image as an actor, much like Kaminey did to Shahid.

Soon enough, KJo corrected Shahid and said that he named Ranveer. Almost as instantly, Shahid disagreed. “No, I don’t agree with him,” the actor said.

Shahid had gone to Koffee With Karan to promote his upcoming movie R… Rajkumar with Sonakshi Sinha. The film was in news since interestingly that year, Rajkummar Rao worked in Hansal Mehta’s Shahid while Shahid Kapoor released Prabhu Dheva’s R… Rajkumar.

Sonakshi, who joined Shahid on Koffee With Karan, chuckled after hearing what Shahid had to say about Ranveer doing Kaminey and probably him mistaking Ranveer for Ranbir. Years later, Shahid and Ranveer did end up working in a movie, that too Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat with Deepika Padukone. Rumours of their cold war was rife even then and if various news reports are anything to go by, the two actors decided that they wouldn’t work with each other ever again.
