Following Aamir Khan’s exit, Rajkummar Rao to lead Dinesh Vijan's Ujjwal Nikam biopic? Here's what we know

Dinesh Vijan is all set to make a biopic on the renowned public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam. Now the question arises about who will play the lead role. As per a new report, Rajkummar Rao is in talks for the lead. Aamir Khan reportedly decided to step back from the lead role. Meanwhile, Rao, who is gearing up for the release of Bhool Chuk Maaf, can be seen in the role of Nikam. 

Rajkummar Rao in Ujjwal Nikam biopic?

As per a Mid-Day report, “Dinesh is keen on having Rajkummar play Nikam. He brings the right intensity and range to the role. Preliminary talks have been positive, but Raj is immersed in prep for Vikramaditya Motwane’s next, which is a physically and emotionally demanding script since he plays a sportsman. The dates will need to be worked out."

The source added that it was always going to be an interesting courtroom drama with political undertones, but now the team is looking for a tougher and more grounded take that would be more in line with Raj's style if he joins the cast.

Earlier, Pinkvilla reported that Aamir Khan was introduced to the journey of Ujjwal Nikam in the pre-pandemic times, and he has been interested in bringing it to the screen ever since then. 

"There have been several drafts of scripts written by multiple producer partners, but after all the discussions, Aamir is now on the verge of locking his association with Dinesh Vijan on the Ujjwal Nikam Biopic," the source added. It is reported that Aamir was supposed to act in this film, but at the moment, he will only be associated with the project as a producer.

Who is Ujjwal Nikam?

Ujjwal Nikam is a renowned Indian prosecutor and has worked on notable murder and terrorism cases, and has assisted in the prosecution of suspects in the 1993 Bombay Blasts, the Pramod Mahajan case, the 2008 Mumbai Attacks, and the Gulshan Kumar murder case.

He was also the prosecutor in the 2013 Mumbai gang rape case and the 2016 Kopardi rape and murder case. In 2016, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri.

Meanwhile, on the professional front, Rajkummar is all set to be seen in Bhool Chuk Maaf. Co-starring Wamiqa Gabbi, the romantic comedy will hit theaters on May 9. Directed by Karan Sharma and produced by Dinesh Vijan in association with Amazon MGM Studios, the film tells the story of Ranjan, a groom who gets trapped in a time loop just before his wedding, waking up repeatedly on the day of his haldi ceremony.
