Director SS Sajjan’s Four Walls & Two Nighties marked veteran character artiste Achyuth Kumar’s transition to lead actor. The film was a tale about a father’s relationship dynamic with his four children – three daughters and a son.
Achyuth played Shankaranna, a government employee and single father, who, for reasons best known to him, keeps his grown-up daughters confined to their home (literally within four walls and wearing nighties), once they complete their graduation. While the daughters do not complain, Shankaranna’s son, the youngest of his children, cannot wrap his head around why his father would not get his daughters married. To make matters worse, neighbours too have been whispering about the ‘girls’ fate at being stuck at home’.
The film, though, is not only about Shankaranna and his children, but also explores his early days, as the first man from his village to get a government job, wear trousers, move to the city and have a love marriage. When his wife then dies of complications in child birth after their fourth one, he takes up the responsibility of his children, single-handedly, without ever letting them feel the absence of their mother. Much of the rest of the narrative of Sajjan’s film is about why Shankaranna refuses to toe the line and get his daughters settled.
Four Walls & Two Nighties was released in theatres by award-winning filmmaker D Satya Prakash (of Rama Rama Re and Ondalla Eradalla fame), but was pitted against several other films that week and got very limited number of screens. The film has now got an OTT outing. It is available to stream on Amazon Prime now.
The film also stars Bhaskar Ninasam, Dr Pavitra, Dr Janvi Jyothi, Rachana Dasharath, Sujay Shastry, Dattanna, Shreya Shetty, Vikas Naik, T Vishwanath Naik, among others.
