Versatile acting elite Frances Sternhagen passed away at 93, a month and a half before her 94th birthday celebration. She died in her New Rochelle home on Monday evening due to natural causes. 

The news was announced by her family to the media and was shared on Instagram by her son John Carlin in a touching post. Frances Sternhagen was known for numerous Tony nominations, including the two she won for The Good Doctor in 1974 and The Heiress in 1995, respectively.

In a post featuring several photographs of the late actress, ranging from photos of a blossoming Frances, to a motherly one, to one featuring a great grandmotherly Sternhagen beaming her trademark candid grin. “I just want to give thanks for the remarkable gift of an artist and human being that was Frances Sternhagen.”

He continued, “She was beloved by many. I’m very lucky I was able to call her my mom, my friend, my song and dance partner. We were together last week, and we spoke Monday afternoon, said how much we loved and missed one another.” The actor was about to hop on a plane to meet his mom when he got the tragic news and bolted.

Promising to perform songs this weekend in honor of his mom, including one inspired by her, John Carlin reminisced how Frances Sternhagen encouraged her son’s writing and singing skills. Concluding his tribute, he penned, “Fly on Frannie, The curtain goes down on a life so richly, passionately, humbly and generously lived.”

Condolences and loving messages came pouring in as the actress was loved by many. One fan wrote, “God gained a genuine angel!” while another commented, “Oh no. What a fabulous woman, fabulous actress, and clearly a fabulous mother.” A third rightly noted, “What a great legacy she leaves us. Condolences.”
