In the early 90s, Raveena Tandon and Akshay Kumar were the 'it' pair, both on and off screen. They starred in the hit 1994 film Mohra, which resulted in them dating each other for years before getting engaged later in the decade. While the hottest couple of the 1990s appeared to be on their way to a happily-ever-after, they split up. Their breakup was widely discussed and written about — so much so that people still talk about it, even bringing it up often with Raveena. So, the actress recently addressed this and made some interesting revelations in an interview with a news agency.
Read on to find out about Raveena's recent candid revelations:
'I don't even remember when Akshay and I got engaged'
In a recent podcast, the Aranyak actress, who was popularly known as the Mast Mast girl after Mohra's hit song Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast, said that she gets annoyed when people bring up her broken engagement with Akshay, and that she doesn't understand why it's still so fascinating. Adding that she doesn't even remember when she was engaged to Akshay, Raveena said in the interview, "We were a hit pair during Mohra, and even now, when we bump into each other socially, we meet and chat. Everyone moves on. Girls have been changing their boyfriends every week in college, but one engagement that broke is still stuck in people's my head. I don’t know why. Everyone moves on. People get divorced, and they move on. What’s the big deal?"
On rumours of jealousy
In response to rumours that she was jealous of the other women in Akshay's life, Raveena revealed that after they split up, both she and Akshay moved on and began dating other people. "It comes up, and it comes up like there’s a war between everyone whom he’s involved with. Hello, once I was out of his life, I was already dating someone else, and he was already dating someone else, so kahan se jealousy ayegi?" she said.
'Karan Johar hasn't forgiven me for turning down Rani Mukherji's role in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'
In an interview with a news agency, Raveena said that she was offered Rani Mukherji's part in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai by Karan Johar, but she turned it down because she had a smaller role than Kajol. She added that Karan still hasn't forgiven her for this. "Karan still doesn’t forgive me for not doing Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. But he didn’t understand at the time that Kajol was my contemporary. We started together, and we were both playing lead roles. So, I couldn’t have done Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, in which I was at a lower… where I probably had a smaller role, like Rani. And Rani benefited from it because she was a newcomer," she said.
On being offered Darr
Not just for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Raveena revealed that she was approached for Darr as well. The actress says that she turned down the film because she was expected to wear a swimsuit, which she squarely refused to do. The film eventually went on to star Juhi Chawla and was a big hit.
'Filmmakers thought that I was arrogant'
In the interview with the news agency, Raveena revealed that back in her heyday, directors and producers thought that she was arrogant because she had placed certain conditions on what she would and would not do onscreen. The actress said that she was vocal if she felt uncomfortable doing certain dance steps, wearing swimming costumes, or kissing. The KGF 2 actress added that she missed out on many films because of this.
On being body shamed
Even though she was among the top actresses in the 1990s, Raveena says that she was body shamed, and that back in that era, it was not uncommon for heroines' careers to get destroyed after nasty articles were written about them in magazines. "I was called a lot of things. Thunder thighs, TTs, miss this, and miss that. Not only me, but some other heroines also faced that. In the 90s, the woman would be panned, shamed, and literally have her career ruined after nasty articles were written in magazines," she said.
'Sometimes, I feel that nobody likes me'
Speaking to the Hindustan Times after being conferred with the Padma Shri last month, Raveena had said that she locks horns with everyone and sometimes thinks that nobody likes her. Saying that she has never worked with awards in mind, she said, "I have never worked for awards, that’s true. God has been really kind that my work has been recognised. I am a pretty neutral person. I lock horns with everyone. Sometimes I think nobody likes me, but somewhere in the universe, there’s someone watching over me."
